Bingo originally started as a family game and could be purchased in either a set of 12 cards or as set of 24 cards. The set of 12 cards could be obtained for a total of $1 and the set of 24 cards could be purchased for a price of $2. The toy salesman Edwin S. Lowe created both.
The popular past time did however reach a global scale not long after, despite Bingo starting up as a familiar game. This was due to a priest from Pennsylvania who thought such a game would work well to raise money for his church, he therefore embarked on holding a series of bingo gaming events.
Such an idea didn’t however produce the desired effects, instead of just one or two winners; the game cards would generate tens of winners every game played. This problem occurred due to the fact that the original game of bingo had not been designed to be played by a large number of people. This problem has however been solved since in the shape of a game that provides a total of 6000 cards with a series of 6000 different number combinations.
It is said that a total of 10,000 bingo games were in fact being played in 1934, today however this figure has grown vastly and it is estimated that a total of over $90 million are taken a week in America alone.
Bingo in the UK is also a very popular pastime and although the traditional bingo halls were threatened by the introduction of a smoking ban and a hike in tax, the bingo community have reacted by getting behind the bingo cause and as well as the land based bingo halls there are also hundreds of online bingo sites today too.
